Welcome to The Trench

We’re Happy to be here

Welcome to The Trench!

There aren't many things that you can see that well from outer space. But you can see the Rocky Mountain Trench.

Also known as "The Valley of a Thousand Peaks," it runs 1,600 kilometres between the Rocky Mountains to the east and the Columbia Mountains to the west, from the northern tip of the Canadian Rockies to just south of the U.S. border.

At Kootenay Media, we've been capturing the scene and unseen in this enclave of Canadiana since 2012.

The long-standing publications of Go Kimberley, Go Cranbrook, and their merged mag, Go Cranberley (yup, we just chainsawed them in half and glued them right together), have circulated throughout homes and businesses for the last decade and then some.

As of April 2024, we've expanded our reach with the re-branded inaugural issue of The Trench, celebrating local life, culture, business, adventure, and people of the Columbia, Creston, and Elk Valleys.

Every four months, we'll chronicle the southern communities of the Rocky Mountain Trench, from Radium, Fairmont, Invermere, Canal Flats, Kimberley, and Cranbrook, as well as the neighbouring communities of Fernie, Elkford, Sparwood, and Creston.

Our hope is that when you pick up The Trench, you'll feel connected to these landscapes, communities, and people - and perhaps, even from thousands of kilometres away in space, the Trench won't feel so far away.

We gratefully acknowledge that we live and work on the traditional and unceded territory of the ɁamakɁis (Ktunaxa) and Secwepemcúl’ecw (Secwépemc), as well as the chosen home of the Métis people of B.C.
